Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
